Employment Connection Offers On the Job Training for Dislocated Workers

The Employment Connection is offering On the Job Training for workers who have been unemployed for 21½ weeks or more.  This job training benefit is funded by a United States Department of Labor National Emergency Grant received by the Workforce Investment Board (WIB) of Tulare County.  The WIB granted $284,000 to the Employment Connection.

On the job training is beneficial for both businesses and employees.  For each new employee, the business will receive a reimbursement of up to 50% of the employee’s wages during the training period.  The salary reimbursement to the company lasts 4 to 10 weeks, depending upon the amount of skills training required. 

Candidate skill sets are matched to the business’s hiring qualifications.  On the job training can then be provided to bring the new employee up to the business’s expectations for the position.  This training benefit is specifically for the long-term unemployed, defined as being unemployed for 21½ weeks or more.

“On the Job Training is a great opportunity for both employers and unemployed workers who are seeking to utilize their skill set,” stated Junior Russo, Tulare Employment Connection site manager.  “Dislocated workers get valuable training, and the company receives a reimbursement to teach and train their new employee.”

Tulare County is one of only four counties in the state to receive a second round of funding from the National Emergency Grant.  In July 2010, the Workforce Investment Board of Tulare County received funding and dispersed a portion of it to the Employment Connection for On the Job Training.  As a result of the 53 On the Job Training contracts, 47 new employees were hired.
