Those experiencing homelessness help with highway beautification project

On Monday the City of Porterville began its Litter Abatement Pilot Project, a beautification project taking place along Highways 190 and 65.

The project is being done in collaboration with the Tulare County Association of Governments, California Department of Transportation, CalTrans, and Community Services Employment Training, CSET.  The Project will employ individuals experiencing homelessness work along Highway 65 and Highway 190 within the city of Porterville limits. Also included in the work are off ramps and other transportation public right of ways near the highways where litter accumulates. The increased litter abatement will accompany planned landscaping projects along the highways.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, VITA, program prepares federal and state tax returns at no cost to households with less than $57,000 in annual income. Eligible residents may qualify for Federal and California Earned Income Tax Credits, CalEITC.

CSET now recruiting volunteers for tax assistance program

Community Services Employment Training (CSET) is recruiting local volunteers to assist with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA). VITA provides tax preparation and electronic filing services at no cost to Tulare County households with less than $54,000 annual income. In 2021, VITA preparers helped file 3,543 tax returns for low- and moderate-income residents – returning more than $5.9 million to Tulare and Kings Counties. For the 2022 VITA tax season, approximately 200 volunteers will be needed to serve as IRS certified tax preparers.

Connections Center is the first of its kind in Tulare County, California. In its simplest form, Connections does this: Helps clients figure out what they want and then helps them accomplish their goals.

The Tulare County Probation Department sponsored program is the first of its kind in the state and likely in the country. Connections serve youth, adults and families by providing mental health, education, vocational training, as well as drug and alcohol recovery services at one location.

Under the agreement, CalTrans will grant the city $555,930 in litter abatement funds through its Clean California State Initiative. CSET could expand the [city’s Environmental Cleanup Opportunities (ECO) Project] program through the new contract with the city.
